Every Canon Dragon Ball Fusion, Ranked From Weakest To Strongest (2024)

Summary

  • Fusion methods in Dragon Ball include Fusion Dance and Potara Earrings, each with unique requirements and limitations.
  • Various powerful fusions in the series, like Kefla and Gotenks, showcase combined skills and strengths for strong combat abilities.
  • Fusions like Vegito, Merged Zamasu, and Gogeta demonstrate incredible power levels, showing the effectiveness of fusion techniques.

In the world of Dragon Ball, fusion between two characters is an incredible means of powering up, but for various reasons, it's also one of the least used ways of finding new power. While other Dragon Ball media make use of fusion liberally, the manga and anime have only had a very small number of characters use fusion in a canonical storyline.

There are many different kinds of fusion in Dragon Ball. The two most commonly seen are the Fusion Dance and the Potara Earrings. The Fusion Dance allows for two fighters with similar body sizes to fuse after performing a special dance, which must be performed perfectly in sync. Failure to do so will lead to a failed fusion, often exceptionally fat or skinny, and thus impeding the fusion's combat ability. The Potara Earrings are a divine tool used to permanently fuse two individuals who don the earrings at the same time on opposite ears. Other kinds of fusion also exist, but are typically more restricted. Here are all 8 of the fusions seen in the series, ranked by their power.

8 The Old Kai is Actually A Fusion

First Appearance: Dragon Ball Z, "Out from the Broken Sword"

Many fans might not realize that Old Kai is a fusion, but he does explain his origins at one point in the series. In the episode "Ready to Fuse?", Old Kai reveals that when he was much younger, an old witch came up and took one of his Potara Earrings, placing it on her own ear and saying they'd look better on her. When she fully equips the earring, the Kai and the witch are forcibly fused forever, becoming the being fans know as Old Kai.

Old Kai is not particularly strong, but he does have all the witch's skill with magic, allowing him to unlock the latent potential within Gohan. Old Kai has been fused for so long that there's no longer any real distinction between the two personalities, making them now effectively just one being.

7 Kibito Kai Possesses All the Supreme Kai's Skills

First Appearance: Dragon Ball Z, "Ready to Fuse?"

Every Canon Dragon Ball Fusion, Ranked From Weakest To Strongest (2)

Kibito Kai is the Potara fusion of Supreme Kai Shin of Universe 7 and his assistant, Kibito. As Old Kai explains how the Potara Earrings work, Shin and Kibito decide to test it out without much thought, only finding out the fusion is permanent after the fact. Kibito Kai does mention that he feels much stronger, even offering to help fight Buu once again, before the Old Kai tells him that there's still a huge gap in power between them.

Kibito Kai is eventually unfused in Dragon Ball Super, when Kibito Kai makes a wish on the Namekian Dragon Balls to restore them to their former appearances. From that point forward, Kibito and Kai Shin are two beings once again. Kibito Kai never fights, so it's hard to say exactly how powerful he is, but he should at least still have all the martial arts skills demonstrated by Shin, meaning he's no pushover.

6 Piccolo Becomes the Nameless Namekian Once Again

First Appearance: Dragon Ball Z, "The Reunion"

Every Canon Dragon Ball Fusion, Ranked From Weakest To Strongest (3)

Piccolo, as a Namekian, has access to a different, biological type of fusion. Piccolo first tests this fusion with a fellow Namekian warrior that he meets on Namek, known as Nail. Fusing with Nail increases Piccolo's power significantly, and he gains a new understanding of his existence thanks to Nail's knowledge of Namekian culture. Piccolo later reconciles with Kami, whom he was once fused with eons ago, and the two fuse once again back into the being originally known as the "Nameless Namekian." Now going by Piccolo (though Goku calls him "Kamiccolo" at first), this sees Piccolo's power increase drastically, allowing him to keep up with Super Saiyan.

Like Potara fusion, the fusion of two Namekians seems to be permanent. While the personality of the fused being is mostly that of Piccolo, he still retains memories and feelings from Kami, which sometimes offer Piccolo some special insight.

5 Gotenks Was the First Big Fusion

First Appearance: Dragon Ball Z, "Gotenks is Born"

Every Canon Dragon Ball Fusion, Ranked From Weakest To Strongest (4)

Gotenks is the Fusion Dance fusion of Goten and Trunks, and the first major fusion to appear in the series. Goku, who learned the fusion dance while deep in space, teaches the two young boys how to fuse in the hopes that they will be a match for Buu. It takes Goten and Trunks quite some time to master the Fusion Dance, creating several different failed fusions before finally nailing the transformation. Gotenks has a wide array of abilities and is far stronger than either Trunks or Goten alone. As a Fusion Dance fusion, Gotenks can only exist for 30 minutes at a time.

As a fusion of two Saiyans, Gotenks is able to go Super Saiyan as well, and can reach greater levels of power than either Trunks or Goten could, able to achieve Super Saiyan 3 with ease. Gotenks becomes a go-to move for Trunks and Goten when faced with powerful enemies, and the two boys are naturals when it comes to operating as a fused being.

4 Vegito Proves The Power of Fusions is Incredible

First Appearance: Dragon Ball Z, "Union of Rivals"

Every Canon Dragon Ball Fusion, Ranked From Weakest To Strongest (5)

Vegito is the Potara Earring fusion of Goku and Vegeta, using Potara Earrings provided by the Supreme Kai. For mortals like Goku and Vegeta, it's eventually revealed that a Potara fusion only lasts for one hour, rather than being permanent. Vegito possesses incredible power, and is able to turn Super Saiyan on top of that, allowing him to outmatch even Super Buu. Even after being turned into a candy, Vegito is still able to fight back, proving that the fusion's united power is no joke.

In Dragon Ball Super, Vegito is formed again in the battle against Goku Black, this time wielding the divine power of Super Saiyan Blue. Blue Vegito proves to be a force to be reckoned with, although the fusion ends early due to them expending too much energy too quickly.

3 Kefla Wields the Power of the Legendary Super Saiyan

First Appearance: Dragon Ball Super, "Bloodcurdling! The Explosive Birth of a New Super Warrior!"

Every Canon Dragon Ball Fusion, Ranked From Weakest To Strongest (6)

Kefla is the Potara Earring fusion of Universe 6 Saiyans Kale and Caulifla, uniting the two "sworn sisters" in a single body. Unlike most fusions, which become a mixture of the personalities of the two fused beings, Kefla mostly behaves exactly like Caulifla--that is, aggressive and co*cky. Kefla has access to Kale's Legendary Super Saiyan transformation, giving her access to a nearly limitless source of power. Kefla seems to enjoy battling and had a particular fondness for going up against Goku, whom she seemed to respect highly.

Kefla's transformation was meant to be a weapon of last resort, with the two Saiyans given the Potara Earrings before the Tournament of Power for just such an occasion. Her power is dozens of times higher than that of either Kale or Caulifla alone, easily forcing Goku to resort to Super Saiyan Blue to stand a chance.

2 Merged Zamasu Had the Power of A God

First Appearance: Dragon Ball Super, "Worship Me! Give Praise Unto Me! The Explosive Birth of a Merged Zamasu!"

Every Canon Dragon Ball Fusion, Ranked From Weakest To Strongest (7)

Merged Zamasu is the Potara Earring fusion of Goku Black (Zamasu in Goku's body) and the Future Zamasu of Future Trunks' timeline into a single being. He possesses an unimaginable level of power, capable of fighting back against Goku, Vegeta, and Future Trunks all at the same time, in their most powerful states. He has both the immortality of a divine being and the unlimited potential of a mortal, making him a kind of ultimate being. The situation was so dire as to force Goku and Vegeta to fuse into Vegito once again, as that was the only way to stand up to Zamasu.

A rare fusion between a mortal and a god, Merged Zamasu has some major drawbacks as well. Incorporating a mortal into a mostly divine body caused bizarre mutations as the Merged Zamasu took damage, causing him to develop a grotesque appearance. When the hour of Potara was up, the two bodies couldn't unfuse, creating an even more disgusting being. Merged Zamasu was ultimately only defeated with a Spirit Bomb from Future Trunks, and even then wasn't gone entirely.

1 Gogeta's Power Measured Up to Broly

First Appearance: Dragon Ball Super: Broly

Every Canon Dragon Ball Fusion, Ranked From Weakest To Strongest (8)

Gogeta is the Fusion Dance fusion of Goku and Vegeta, which debuted canonically for the first time in Dragon Ball Super: Broly. Gogeta is phenomenally powerful, able to keep up with Broly's ever-increasing Legendary Super Saiyan power through use of Super Saiyan Blue. When Gogeta's beam attacks crossed with Broly's energy attacks, the combined force of the two ripped a hole in the universe temporarily, sending Gogeta and Broly hurtling through space and time. Gogeta was substantially faster than Broly as well, able to land hits while effortlessly dodging Broly's own attacks.

Gogeta was even capable of killing Broly, and would have had it not been for a last-minute wish on the dragon balls by Cheelai and Lemo. For these reasons, it's an easy call to say that Gogeta is the strongest fusion seen in the canonical Dragon Ball universe to date.
